Mina is a narrow valley east of Mecca that becomes the world's largest temporary settlement during the Hajj. After the standing at Arafat and the night at Muzdalifah, pilgrims arrive in Mina for the days of tashriq, staying in the vast encampment of tents that covers the valley floor. Here they perform the stoning of the jamarat, casting pebbles at three pillars that represent the rejection of temptation and evil.
The rites at Mina connect to the story of Abraham and Ishmael and to the Prophet's practice on his pilgrimages. Historically the valley also served as a station on the overland Hajj routes, where caravans rested and provisioned before the final approach to Mecca. The stoning ritual, the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha, and the talbiyah chanted across the valley define the collective experience of the pilgrimage's final days.
Outside Hajj season, Mina is largely quiet, but its mosques, jamarat complex, and infrastructure remain landmarks on the Mecca road. The modern jamarat bridge and the scale of the permanent and seasonal works illustrate how an ancient valley ritual has been adapted to accommodate millions of pilgrims in safety while preserving rites unchanged in their essential form since the time of the Prophet.
