Hail sits on Wadi al-Adayri, between Aja and Salma. It is not a new quarter and not a single keep. In the 13th-early 14th centuries AH it was the Rashidi seat in northern Najd, on a road from the Jabal to Qassim and Syria.
Airif Fort on a watching hill is the standing work. Barzan was the Rashidi audience-palace; little of it remains. Lubda and Sarha keep mud houses. Collapsing the town into Barzan loses the layer: a town of forts, not one monument.
Hail is not a tourist capital of Shammar stretched over all Najd. The pin is the town's area.
