Abu Qubays rises east of Makkah, near al-Safa, one of the two Akhshaban in the gazetteers. That placing is firm in al-Azraqi, Yaqut and later.
The name is explained as a man called Abu Qubays, or as al-Amin in Black-Stone lore: the stone lodged there in the Flood and was brought out. That it was the first land set on the water belongs to fadail books. These are Makkan traditions, not trenches.
The hill is not a relic to be touched, and not a surveyed origin of the Kaaba. The pin is approximate for a mass whose foot is now built over.
