بعد وفاة يزيد بويع عبدالله بن الزبير بالخلافة في مكة، فامتدّ سلطانه على الحجاز والعراق ومصر وأطراف الشام نحو تسع سنين. ضُرب على مكة حصاران؛ أُصيبت الكعبة في أولهما بالمنجنيق فأعاد ابن الزبير بناءها، ثم جاء الحصار الثاني بقيادة الحجاج بن يوسف بأمر عبدالملك بن مروان، فقُتل ابن الزبير سنة 692م وعادت الوحدة للأمويين. فترة فريدة كانت فيها مكة عاصمة خلافة.
