Why visit?
Gives Abha an inner historic layer without mislabelling city-wide photographs as the quarter.
Al-Basta is a pre-grid Abha quarter: tight houses, a level plaza that explains the name, and forts around the cluster. It is among the city’s oldest settlements on the wadi. That is an identification, not a building survey.
It is not al-Miftaha and not Qasr Shada. Woodwork and qitt may appear; not every house is a museum.
The 1921 photograph documents Abha’s governor on his way to the mosque; it is city history, not a street in al-Basta. No freely licensed façade that can be certified as al-Basta itself was found at the time of this review.
