Why visit?
Explore one of the largest harrats in Arabia and its ancient human landscapes.
Harrat al-Raha (also spelled ar-Rahah) is one of the largest volcanic fields in Saudi Arabia, covering thousands of square kilometers جنوب Tabuk and west of the Hejaz Railway corridor. Its basalt flows, cinder cones, and lava tubes create a rugged terrain that has been both barrier and resource for human movement.
Archaeological surveys have identified rock art, stone structures, and settlement traces across the harrat, indicating long-term human use of the volcanic landscape. Water in wadis and fractures supported pastoral and hunting communities, while the harrat's edges connected to trade routes between the Levant, Tabuk, and the Hijaz interior.
Harrat al-Raha forms part of the broader Bilad al-Harrat zone that defines northwestern Arabia. Its scale and archaeological richness make it essential for understanding how volcanic geology and human history intertwined across millennia.
