A'arif Fort crowns Jabal A'arif in the heart of Hail, a hill that gives the fort its name and makes the building visible from much of the city. Its elevated position turned it into the silent sentinel of the oasis town below.
Tradition dates the original construction to about 1840 CE, mid-thirteenth century AH, when the fort was raised to watch and defend Hail from the south. Successive repairs under the Al Rashid emirs and in the Saudi period shaped the form visitors see today. Built of mud brick on roughly 440 square meters within a rectangular wall, the fort includes towers and decorative elements typical of Najdi defensive building.
Now restored as a museum and tourist destination, A'arif Fort offers one of the finest vantage points over Hail and a compact introduction to the political and architectural history of a city that once rivaled Riyadh for influence in northern Arabia.
