Why visit?
Hegra places northwest Arabia on the map of the ancient world—trade, kingdoms, rock architecture. Proof the peninsula was a civilizational corridor, not a void.
About 22 km northeast of AlUla spreads Al-Hijr (Hegra/Mada’in Salih), the largest Nabataean site جنوب Petra, carved in golden sandstone.

Nabataeans on the incense roads
They controlled northern Hejaz caravans. Monumental tombs, wells, and oasis works mark power and trade across the desert.

Thamud in religious memory
Islamic tradition links the landscape to Thamud and the prophet Salih. Visits today are archaeological and educational within AlUla’s managed tourism.
UNESCO 2008
Saudi Arabia’s first World Heritage inscription opened systematic conservation and visitation.
On the map
With Dadan and AlUla, Hegra anchors northwest Arabia’s deep past in rock, not only in texts.
