Taif sits on the slopes of the Hijaz mountains at roughly 1,800 meters above sea level, enjoying a mild climate that made it a favored summer resort for rulers and merchants of the Hijaz. The city is renowned for Taif roses and for premium sidr honey, products that still define its identity in Arabian culture.
In pre-Islamic and early Islamic times Taif was the homeland of the tribe of Thaqif and the site of the famous market of Ukaz. The Prophet Muhammad traveled to Taif early in his mission seeking support, an episode of rejection and endurance recorded in the sira. Later, Taif entered Muslim history through the campaigns that brought the Hijaz under Medinan authority.
Today Taif remains the historic highland garden of the Hijaz, where agriculture, poetry, and Prophetic memory meet in one of Arabia's most distinctive cities.
