Al-Baqi, known as Jannat al-Baqi, is the oldest and most famous Islamic cemetery in Medina. It holds the graves of a large number of Companions of the Prophet, several Mothers of the Believers, Fatimah al-Zahra, and many members of the Prophet's household. For fourteen centuries believers have come to greet the dead, recite prayers, and reflect on the first community of Islam.
The cemetery lies beside al-Masjid an-Nabawi and forms part of Medina's sacred geography together with other historic sites linked to the Hijra, the Battles of the Prophet's era, and the early caliphate. Although the visible markers of many graves have changed over time, the spiritual status of the place remains central to Muslim visitation.
Al-Baqi is among the holiest burial grounds in Islam. Its tombs connect the living ummah to the men and women who built the city of the Prophet.
