Marid Castle is among the most famous fortresses in Arabian history, with origins reaching back before the Common Era. Arabs proverbially linked its strength to defiance: "Marid has rebelled and al-Ablaq has grown proud." For centuries it guarded the strategic oasis of Dumat al-Jandal and witnessed major events in the history of northern Arabia.
