The al-Mawsham Mountains, including the al-Qanan area, rise in the northern Hijaz near Tabuk, forming a rugged highland between the coastal plain and the interior deserts. Their wadis, passes, and springs have guided human and animal movement for thousands of years, linking the Levantine approaches to Arabia with the Hijaz and Najd.
The mountains contain archaeological sites, inscriptions, and natural features associated with the long history of the region — from prehistoric pastoralists to Islamic-era travelers on Hajj and trade routes. The terrain offered strategic vantage points and sheltered water sources in an otherwise demanding environment.
