Kaaba and mataf
Pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba. The open courtyard (mataf) has been paved and expanded across centuries, from early Islamic rulers to modern Saudi expansions that now welcome millions.
From open yard to great mosque
Early Islam knew no enclosing wall; Umar and Uthman enlarged the sanctuary and added arcades. Under Saudi care the complex reached vast capacity—on the order of 1.5 million square meters and millions of worshippers at peak times—under the General Authority for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.
