One of the largest date-palm oases in Arabia, home to Arab Jewish tribes before and after Islam, a flourishing agricultural and commercial center whose recent excavations revealed a fortified Bronze Age city from 2400 BCE and a fifteen-kilometer wall with seventy-seven towers.

A volcanic field in Tabuk Province that gained global attention in 2009 when an exceptional earthquake swarm of more than thirty thousand events, the largest measuring 5.7 magnitude, prompted the evacuation of al-Ays and produced a ten-kilometer surface crack from dyke intrusion.
