Al-Tha'labiyya was one of the greatest sites on the Darb Zubayda and the largest city on its middle segment, positioned at the one-third point of the journey from Kufa to Mecca. Construction of its facilities is attributed to the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, and the Abbasids later expanded it substantially. The station included a fortress, a market, and nine or more wells each about 1.1 meters in diameter; their sweet water continued to flow more than thirteen centuries after they were dug.
Islamic sources describe al-Tha'labiyya as a flourishing town that witnessed dramatic events, including the drowning of seven pilgrims in a single overcrowding incident and the forced halting of Hajj caravans during severe drought years such as 386 AH. Military interventions were also recorded in 303 AH to repel armed attacks. Ibn Jubayr visited in the sixth century AH and left a detailed description of the site.
Al-Tha'labiyya marked the turning point of the Hajj journey across the dreaded Dahna desert. As the largest settlement in that sector, it offered pilgrims water, commerce, and protection at the moment when the hardest stage of the road lay behind them.
