Darb Zubayda (the Kufan Hajj Road) is one of the greatest infrastructure projects of the Islamic world — roughly 1,400 km from Kufa in Iraq to Mecca, with stations, cisterns, wells, and fortresses developed under Abbasid patronage, notably by Zubayda bint Ja'far.

al-Amya

A square cistern on the Kufa Hajj road near the Iraqi border, between al-Aqaba and al-Qa'. Atlal survey: 28.4 m to a side. The name is from how little flood it holds. The pin is approximate.

Zubalah

The largest and most sophisticated station on the entire Darb Zubayda, located on the northern section of the Kufan Hajj road. It was famed for rock-hewn wells more than fifty meters deep and two massive reservoirs that served as a commercial and service hub for pilgrims.

Al-Shuqūq in the road-books, al-Shihiyyat in the field. A Darb Zubaydah manzil where Ibn Jubayr found two cisterns full. The pin is approximate; a 1944 marker is not evidenced in this review.

al-Khuzaimiyya

A principal water station on the Darb Zubayda at Zarud, with a square pool, three basins, a fifteen-meter well, and fortifications. It is linked to Caliph Harun al-Rashid, who visited several times and composed poetry about nearby Zarud.

A manzil on the Basra Hajj road in Abu Ishaq al-Harbi’s list: after Jadilah, before al-Dathina. It is not a Kufa / Darb Zubaydah station. The pin is approximate; a Dahna-point identification is not settled.

al-Tha'labiyya

A major city on the Darb Zubayda and the most important settlement on the road's middle section, lying at the one-third mark from Kufa. It had a fortress, a market, nine or more wells whose sweet water still flowed after thirteen centuries.

Fayd was an early Islamic town and Hajj-route station in northern Najd, with surviving ruins that show how pilgrimage infrastructure shaped the desert road.

Khalsa Pavement

A five-kilometer stone-paved road on the Darb Zubayda built to protect pilgrims from mud in flatlands that turned boggy after rain. Flanking stone walls and underground channels rank it among the route's greatest engineering achievements.

Samira'

A principal Darb Zubayda station where pilgrims sighted the crescent moon, especially for Ramadan, and where Bedouin raids inflicted heavy losses on Hajj caravans. It lay between Fayd and al-Hajir and served as a critical water supply point.

A Darb Zubaydah manzil between Sumayra and Ma'din al-Nuqra. Water is mentioned in the road-books in general. The pin is an area, not a point; Fayd photographs are not used under this name.

Ma'dan al-Naqra

An Abbasid Hajj station also known as al-Jufniyya, marked by a historic economic rivalry with neighboring Ma'dan al-Qurashi that produced two parallel routes. In 604 AH the catastrophe known as Sadr Jahannam claimed more than five thousand pilgrims in a single season.

Mughitha al-Mawan

A station on the Kufan Hajj road between Ma'din al-Nuqra and al-Rabadha, matched in the field to al-Saqa'a: a square cistern with a settling basin, a round cistern, wells, and the footings of a qasr and mosque as Waki' described.

Al-Rabadha was a major early Islamic settlement and route station east of Madinah, excavated remains revealing homes, mosque traces and road logistics.

Wajra

One of the finest Abbasid water stations on the Hajj roads, on the Basran route with a main pool forty to fifty meters across, a settling basin, and a fifteen-kilometer channel to Wadi al-Aqiq. King Faisal ordered its restoration in 1393 AH.

Dhat 'Irq

Dhat Irq (al-Dariba) northeast of Makkah on Darb Zubayda—the miqat for Iraq and Khurasan, last major station before the Haram on the Kufan hajj road.
